“In The Middle are Dead Cats and Skunks” – Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council

by alex on September 21, 2006

Over the past week, I have heard two different speeches urging moderates and the political middle to wake up and say something about the extremists.

Tonight on CBS News, Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, stated “Well, you know what’s usually in the middle are dead cats and skunks
that have been run over. That’s usually what’s in the middle of the
road
.”

Wow, I’ve never been called a dead cat or a skunk, but I do find it deeply offensive that the president of an organization that describes itself as a “Christian Organization promoting traditional values and the Judeo-Chrisitan value system” would say that about those of us in the middle.

That type of statement is absolutely not part of the Judeo-Christian value system that I know.  I am a on the board of my local YMCA, which has its roots in evangelical Christianity and the values I embrace are theirs:

  • Caring: love; putting others before yourself.

  • Honesty: integrity; to tell the truth.

  • Respect: regard; to treat others as you would have them treat you.

  • Responsibility: duty; to what you should.

Perhaps Mr. Perkins, should go back to school and learn what Judeo-Christian values are.

The time has come for those of us in the middle to speak up and stop the extremists.
